writing to write.

i miss this. make no mistake, there is a certain satisfaction, and even a thrill, in writing to learn/participate/synthesize. however. i also enjoy writing for the sake of writing, for the pleasure of the craft – the dynamic of furrowed brow, cramped fingers, agony meeting exquisite release, only to return to the same page with a freshly critical eye at some future moment … my favorite brand of torture.

read a bit of Annie Dillard’s The Writing Life before bed last night. bothered by how much of my writing is because it is assigned. leaving this here as a reminder to make time for pleasure.

and always this (a reminder from Dillard):

Do not hurry; do not rest. -Goethe
